Omar Rayo

Omar Rayo (1928–2010) was a Colombian painter, sculptor, and draftsman, recognized as one of the most important figures in geometric and optical art in Latin America. He began his career in figurative drawing and caricature, later consolidating the language for which he is best known today: an abstract practice centered on geometry, visual perception, and formal rigor. His work has been exhibited internationally and was included in major events such as the São Paulo Biennial and the Venice Biennale.

His practice is characterized by the precise use of line, strong black-and-white contrasts, and structures that create optical illusions and a sense of movement. In dialogue with modern art references and pre-Columbian imagery, Rayo developed a body of work that combines mathematical precision with cultural resonance. In 1981, he founded the Rayo Museum of Latin American Drawing and Printmaking in Roldanillo, reaffirming his commitment to the dissemination of art and cultural education in Colombia.
